New Zealand's forecourts fall into three card families. Brand cards work across their own family; one multi-brand network spans them all.

Cards that span the families

  • CardSmart Fuel Card 1,400+ sites, 9 brands: Mobil, bp, Z Energy, Caltex, G.A.S., Challenge, NPD, Waitomo and Gull (over 90% of NZ fuel sites). Some sites add a surcharge.7
  • Gull Fleetcard Runs on the same CardSmart (Cardlink) acceptor network.7

Cross-refuelling in short

Three families: Z/Caltex/Challenge, bp/G.A.S./RD Petroleum and Mobil/Waitomo/NPD/Allied. Only CardSmart (and the Gull Fleetcard on its network) spans all of them, and Gull isn't listed for the Z, bp or Mobil cards. The lines aren't absolute: Kora says some Caltex, Z, G.A.S. and BP sites accept its Mobilcard, without the discount. Resellers such as NZ Fuel Cards and GOfuel issue the bp, Caltex, Mobil and Z cards themselves, so you get a choice of card, but each card is still accepted only within its brand's family.689
