How South Africa's regulated fuel price affects fuel cards

In South Africa the retail petrol price is regulated and set monthly, and retailers may not give consumers a benefit on a petrol sale. The retail diesel price is not regulated (only a wholesale list price is published). So card discounts are diesel-only: for petrol vehicles a card is worth its fees, controls, toll handling and credit terms, not a pump discount. Per-fuel-transaction fees are common, so we show them separately.

South African fleet cards come in two kinds: oil-company cards that run on their own forecourts (closed loop), and bank cards that work across brands (open loop). Both kinds run on the same BankservAfrica switch.

TotalEnergies: 444 stations (another TotalEnergies page says 500+ in SA). Sasol FuelEasy: 230+ participating stations. Astron Energy: 'the largest participating fleet card network'. bp FleetMove: 500+ bp stations, non-bp 'if necessary'. Engen: its fleet pages could not be read, so unconfirmed.123456

    Bank cards (Absa, FirstRand/FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank) work across brands; discounts apply only at the bank's partner brand. Absa: about 16,000 fuel and repair merchants and all SA toll plazas, with Sasol and Caltex alliances. Standard Bank: average savings with Shell DieselPro (50c/L) and Caltex StarCard (R1/L over 10,000 L a month). Nedbank via Eqstra: accepted at any forecourt, with the rebate only at Caltex Star/Astron Energy.10789

Cross-refuelling in short

Oil-company cards are essentially single-brand: we found no reciprocal acceptance deal between SA oil companies. Shell's open-loop option and bp's 'non-bp if necessary' are the exceptions. For several brands on one card, use a bank card. Cross-border use depends on the product: PASA lists Namibia, Swaziland and Lesotho, and travellers' reports that bank garage cards mostly work in Namibia are unconfirmed. Check your card's terms before a trip.10
